It seems like the whole world has been really stressful lately. Stressful news, stress events in the world, everything seems to moving faster and faster. Modern life is permeated with stress. Families are now typically spread out all over the country. Most require two incomes just to get by and day care for children has become the standard. Salaried people are working longer hours, bringing additional work home, hoping that they’re not next in line to be laid off. We rush here and there, trying to take care of household errands and maintenance. This is certainly a recipe for chronic stress, so it’s no wonder that most of us are in a constant state of being stressed out, drinking gallons of coffee or 3 or 4 energy drinks a day just to get everything we need to do done.

So let me ask, do you eat lots of sweets to feel better during the day or drink 3 or 4 glasses of wine to relax at night? Are you experiencing tension headaches or pains in the neck, back face or stomach? Do you wake up tired and become exhausted during the day? Does it feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders? Are you on edge? Do you regularly worry about the past or the future? If you are suffering some or all of these symptoms then you are experiencing anxiety and may be even suffering from chronic stress.

The problem with chronic stress is that it opens you up to developing a wide variety of severe health conditions. It’s an established medical fact that constantly being under chronic stress compromises your immune system and leads to heart and circulatory conditions. Psychologically it can lead to anxiety and depression. So to get your life in balance a good strategy would be to analyze the sources of your stress and learn how to deal with them. While all stressful situations cannot be eliminated, you can take steps to reduce or relieve your stress and anxiety.

Before we get into what you can do to relieve your stress and anxiety to a manageable degree, let’s take a quick look at the cost of chronic stress. When you are continually stressed out your immune system is compromised. You body is less able to fight off bacterial and viral invaders. This is why people that are chronically stressed become ill more frequently and we all know that losing work isn’t a good stress relief or management technique! Stress can also lead to adrenal exhaustion and a host of endocrine related problems. Stress taxes your heart function and studies have shown that long term stress can also lead to heart and cardiovascular disease. Chronic stress also goes hand in hand with anxiety and over time can produce depression. Now, let’s see what techniques you can use for relieving stress.

One of the best stress relief tips is optimizing your time. No matter how packed your schedule may be, treat the items on your regular schedule as you would expenses in your budget. Prioritize with a top down approach. Put your must do items at the top of your schedule and ruthlessly do away with or give to other family members things that needlessly eat up your time. Give some of the work to your kids – they can be very helpful little people. Your kids can take care of the laundry and dishes. This helps them to learn responsibility while contributing to the common good. If you drive your kids to sports or other play activities, try to set up a car pool with other parents, alternating days or weeks. Any way you can save time will go a long way toward relieving your stress. If possible, use public transportation instead of driving to work. You can use the time to read, knit or do whatever you’d like. It will also save you wear and tear on your car and money on gas too.

An excellent way to relieve the stress and anxiety of everyday life is any form of regular exercise. Some of the best exercises to relieve stress are Tai Chi or Yoga classes. In addition to being good for the body they are great for calming your mind. If your schedule is too cramped to squeeze in an hour, find some simple exercises you can do throughout the day. Just walking for ten or fifteen minutes a couple of times a day will help.

Make sure you eat right. What you put into your body does matter! Good nutrition helps your body function as it should and improves your ability to focus. Your improved focus will help your workflow do better so you won’t have to bring home so much work at night. Herbal teas, such as chamomile and hibiscus flower teas are soothing and help you relax, sleep better and are excellent ways to relieve your stress and anxiety.
