Depression is an illness that can have different definitions depending on who you’re asking. Many people go through this highly personal experience. The physical manifestations of depression can also differ considerably. People who’ve undergone clinical depression will likely explain it differently than others who haven’t had it.

Spotting Warning Signs Of Depression

The symptoms aren’t the same for everyone. Depression as a serious disorder and has the potential of destroying a person’s life if left unaddressed or ignored. Most people suffering from depression say it’s like despair that cloaks everything they feel and do. If your idea of depression is feeling down because you lost a ballgame then you’re way off. It goes deeper than that. Depression is worse than simple frustration or sadness.

The bottom line is it takes everything away from an individual. You lose focus, can’t concentrate, it drains your energy and joy practically disappears. You cease caring about anything. Suddenly nothing matters anymore. Even your loved ones turn into unimportant entities. People who are depressed for extended periods become so used to it that other emotions start turning into unfamiliar and scary stuff.

Physical Manifestations Of Depression

Besides taking its toll on someone’s mental status and emotions, depression also affects the physical aspect. It can give rise to either appetite loss or increased eating. Depression also tosses out your motivation and any energy you have.

When depressed, you usually adopt a more inactive lifestyle. This by itself can lead to several other issues. However, when added to a number of the physical signs and symptoms of depression or the side effects, you’ll be able to see right away why depression is no laughing matter.

Depression can result in the following:

  • Poor nutrition – Depressed individuals neglect their nutrition. Planning and preparing meals becomes too much work, which can lead to other health woes.
  • Hygiene concerns – People with depression can’t bring themselves to be involved in self-care. They lack the motivation and energy for such things.
  • Inadequate sleep – Insomnia can result from depression. This deprives the body of much-needed sleep to function well.
  • Pains and aches – The mental state impacts the physical. When depressed, chemicals inside the brain for signaling pain are just as affected as the chemicals for feeling happy. This increases the physical pains and aches and aggravates the sad feelings.

There are several signs and symptoms of depression. Depressed individuals feel worthless, hopeless, irritable, useless, and guilty or sorry for no real reason. They’re constantly, severely sad about stuff, distracted, and feel tired or lack energy. The depression also has them developing insomnia, having zero interest for things that previously intrigued them. There’s also a marked weight change.

Depression can quickly snowball into something more serious. The depression worsens the longer you have it, until you can’t see a possible solution anymore. As a result, depressed individuals resign themselves to staying miserable forever.

What exactly is the cause of depression? Well, it can be triggered by seasons changing, losing loved ones, a particular event or chemical imbalances within the brain. Treating depression often involves some counseling or a bit of medication for brain chemistry modification.

If there’s someone close to you battling depression, just be there for them. This is the single-best thing to do. Talking to them is one way of helping them survive this critical period. Lend a hand when seeking medical treatment.

Meanwhile, if you think you’re depressed, consult qualified healthcare providers. Remember: you don’t have to let depression rule your life and ruin it completely. With enough support and assistance, conquering depression, moving on, and living life to the fullest is very possible.
